FETHIYE – LYCIAN WAY

The Lycian Way is Turkey’s first waymarked long distance footpath covering 500km of ancient footpaths and tracks.  The route starts close to Fethiye at the village of Ovacik.  It would take several weeks to walk the entire route.  As most people have limited time available, it is recommended that you choose a section to cover in however many days you can spare.  We can organise a tailor-made route to suit you, with a guide and all the support services you might need. Contact us for more details.

We have researched a short walking itinerary in the Fethiye area for people who would like to extend a holiday on board one of our privately chartered boats or other land based holiday. The itinerary can be tailored to suit individual groups of any size and would be led by an experienced walking guide/leader trained in first aid. Accommodation would be organised in Fethiye or elsewhere, to suit individual choice.

Day 1: Yanıklar – Pastoral Vadi via Yesil Vadi Doga Parkı (9 km/5.5 miles)

Transfer approximately 25 minutes by minibus from Fethiye town centre to the attractive village of Yanıklar. We start our walk from the village following an earth road alongside the Kargı river. The valley has plenty of tree cover. After 5 km we arrive at the Yesil Vadi (Green Valley) nature park for lunch. After lunch we retrace our steps as far as the river where we cross to the other bank to visit the Pastoral Valley eco life style farm. (There is the option of a stay at the farm)

Day 2: Yesil Üzümlü – Cadianda (9.5 km/6 miles)

Transfer, by minibus, inland from Fethiye into the hills through extensive pine forests. The road climbs slowly through a series of hairpin bends until we reach a wide plateau after about half-an-hour. We drive through farming communities with vineyards and almond and fig trees until we reach the traditional village of Yeşilüzümlü. The population of this pretty spot is normally 3500 people but this number doubles during the summer months. From the village we walk (5.5 km) to the ancient settlement of Cadianda, one of the oldest antique cities in the area from the Lycian period. En route we will have a picnic lunch. In the afternoon , we retrace our steps until we come across a forest path that we follow for the last part of the walk. We return to the village at the end of our walk and take a break in the town centre at Yeşilüzümlü

Day 3: Arsa Village and Saklıkent (8 km/5 miles)

In the morning we transfer to the pleasant highland village of Arsa taking about 1.15 hrs by minibus. Here we do a walk in the area before having lunch with a local family. In the afternoon we walk down to the famous Saklıkent Gorge. We will then have time to explore the gorge before returning to Fethiye.

Day 4: Minare Village to Pınara (8 km/5 miles)

Today we have a 50 minute transfer by minibus to Minare Village below the ancient Lycian city of Pinara. The city is set into the mountainside with stunning views in all directions. Very little excavation has taken place here and the natural environment enables the walker to feel more of an explorer. We walk up to the ruins on a rough track. It is exciting to explore the rock-cut tombs in a dried up river bed, the agora and the theatre amongst pine trees. Looking up above the city remains you will see hundreds or tombs cut into the mountainside. As you return down hill from Pinara to the village of Minare you will have an impressive panorama of the Xanthos Valley. We will have lunch with a family in the village before heading on to the beach of Karadere.
